It is no coincidence that people from the horse world often turn out to be strong leaders. Today, I will attempt to explain why.
And let me be clear – far from everyone within equestrian sport has this ability. I am speaking about those who have truly understood.
Horsemanship is about understanding the horse – its needs and its unique roadmap.
The horse reads energy. It mirrors frequency. It does not respond to words – it responds to you. Yet there are people who approach the horse with tools as if the purpose were to beat obedience into it. That is as short-sighted as a conductor striking orchestra members with a baton to make them play better. That is not leadership – it is ignorance.
This is where my philosophy was born: The horse is an instrument. And it is how well we play that instrument that determines what music emerges. My stubborn heavenly horse, Mi Corazón, was the trainer the universe sent me so I would understand this. Energies are frequencies, and frequencies create music.
Leadership Is Music
It doesn’t matter which being you have chosen to lead – your child, your dog, your horse, your partner, or your employees.
You are appointed as its leader to create music. If you are tone-deaf, you will never become a truly successful leader. Yes, you can frighten results into existence – just as dark tones can create drama. But the audience will not sit there moved to tears.
I have seen examples in show jumping and dressage competitions. That ride that makes my stomach knot… and that ride that makes the entire audience rise to their feet, eyes filled with tears, while the rider pats their horse with a smile stretching from ear to ear.
The audience responds to:
Rhythmic music with swing – where instrument and performer share a genuine harmony.
Tune Your Instrument
If you as a leader are an “out-of-tune instrument,” your orchestra will never play music that truly moves people.
It is a great responsibility to be a leader. But the moment we choose to have children, a dog, a horse, a cat – or take on the role of a manager in business – we also choose the responsibility to tune our own instrument. In business, we can step down from the role. As a parent or animal owner, it is not as simple.
Summary
If I, as an instrument, am out of tune – unbalanced, stressed, ungrounded – my team will never play in harmony. My instrument consists of body, mind, and life energy, and they are interconnected and influence one another. Those you choose to lead have exactly the same biological system – but every being has its own unique roadmap. Leadership therefore requires something more than technique and tactics. It requires a deep curiosity and awareness of yourself – and of those you choose to lead.
For only the one who is willing to explore their own instrument can create real magic. And magic does not arise from control – it arises from understanding, presence, and resonance.
Leadership is not control but resonance – and the difference between an out-of-tune leader and a tuned leader is the difference between false music and music that creates magic…
